VietNamNet Bridge – A flood-tide rising to 1.59m, exceeded the level three warning, flooded a number of roads in HCM City on Saturday afternoon.

The flood-tide submerges the Khuong Viet Road in HCM City's District 11 creating difficulties for traffic. The flood-tide is forecast to continue in the next few days.

Luong Dinh Cua Road in District 2 was flooded 30-50cm whereas the Kha Van Can Road in District Thu Duc was flooded 30-40cm.

The flood-tide at predawn on Saturday also broke part of a water-retention wall in Binh Thanh District's Ward 28 submerging nearly 30 houses when the wall, which is more than 1m in height and 10m in length, broke suddenly.

The municipal Flood and Storm Prevention and Control Steering Committee and the Binh Thanh authorities pumped out the water and repaired the damaged wall.

The Southern Regional Hydro-Meteorological Centre forecast that the flood-tide will continue to rise in coming days. The municipal Flood and Storm Prevention and Control Steering Committee sent an urgent letter asking relevant agencies and districts' authorities to conduct preventive measures to cope with the flood-tide.

Repairing the damage

Local authorities in central Thua Thien Hue Province decided to invest VND21 billion (US$1 million) for maintenance of irrigation reservoirs in the locality.

According to the provincial People's Committee, the maintenance would be carried out immediately to make urgent repairs on the reservoirs, which are prone to damage from storms.

Disbursement would focus on the reservoirs of Hoa My in Phong Dien District and Truoi in Phu Loc District, and another two reservoirs in sandy areas of Quang Dien District.

The province has 55 reservoirs on its boundary with a total capacity of 2 billion cubic metres of water. Many of the reservoirs are quite old, including the 30-year-old Phu Bai 2 reservoir in Huong Thuy District. Some have walls with water leakage, posing threats to locals.

During the two storms of Wutip and Nari early this month, the reservoirs had to release water to avoid breaks from storm impacts.

The provincial People's Committee has disbursed VND9.2 billion, which is from the national budget for climate change adaptation and local contingency cost, for a plantation project of mangrove forest in lagoon area in Quang Dien District.

The project includes a plantation and management of 104ha of mangrove forest planted for erosion prevention in the coastal zone and improvement of locals' livelihoods.
