Authorities from the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong have presented certificates of merit to three Republic of Korea nationals in recognition of their contributions to the education of local children with disabilities between 2005 and 2014.
The recipients are Professor Chung Dong Young, President of the Korean Association of Special Education; PhD Choi Young Sook, consultant of the Lam Dong special education support centre and her spouse Kwon Jang Soo.
They got engaged in a special education project aided by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the Korean Association of Special Education, aiming to design activities for disabled children.
Choi Young Sook and Kwon Jang Woo, in particular, left the RoK for Vietnam where they considered as their second home and spent years on the special education work in Lam Dong province.
The project was carried out in late 2012 with a total cost of over 20 billion VND (933,000 USD) with the purpose of providing health care treatment equipment, teaching and learning tools, and improving skills of the teaching staff.
The special education support centre was established under the project to diagnose and assist underdeveloped, hearing-impaired and vision-impaired children as well as provide treatment and rehabilitation services for the handicapped.
In early 2015, the RoK partners transferred the project to the provincial Department of Education and Training to continue in the coming time.
