The water under Thang Long Bridge in Hanoi’s Dong Anh District, has been severely polluted as locals keep dumping rubbish there in recent months.

Construction waste is also dumped there along with household waste. Plastic bags and other kinds of rubbish float in the black water.

"This area has been polluted for a while but nothing has been done. During hot days, our family had to close all windows and doors because of the unbearable odour. I also saw motorbike drivers casually throw rubbish down when they pass by," said Nam, a local in Hai Boi Commune.

Ha Thai Railways Corporation Vice Director Le Minh Khai, the management unit of the bridge section Hai Boi, said it was difficult to deal with because the locals kept littering the site. They had worked with Hai Boi communal authorities to clean the place but it was only good for a few days.

"We cleaned this site in September to no avail," he said.

Khai went on to say that they would keep working with the communal authorities to fine violators and put up a fence to prevent trucks from dumping construction waste under the bridge.
