Long Bien Bridge in Hanoi's Ba Dinh District is one of the most famous bridges in Hanoi and attracts many visitors. However, the surrounding water is being severely polluted by a vast amount of rubbish.
According to the locals, the bridge's surrounding has been littered with rubbish for years and the areas near the river bank have been clogged with rubbish lately. Rubbish and wastewater from Long Bien Market are also dumped there. There are items made from plastic and other materials that will take a long time to decompose.
Nguyen Van Hung, vice chairman of Phuc Xa Ward, said, "We've received information about the situation and ordered a clean-up of the site."
On October 31, Hung and leaders of the local residential groups surveyed the site. Hung said the rubbish was dumped by the locals living nearby. Moreover, the latest flood also brought down a large amount of rubbish in the Red River and local channels.
Phuc Xa Ward People's Committee has asked the locals to burn some rubbish to ease the pollution first.
