Earlier, Tran Vu Long, a deputy director of the bank, went to Nguyen Thai Binh Ward Police Station of District 1 to report loss of VND19.6 billion (US$930,000) from the bank's ATM Card Centre. Long suspected the money may have been misappropriated by the centre's staff or senior official.

At a meeting with the police, Minh reportedly said he had embezzled the money. Taking advantage of his position, Minh reportedly made fake documents and cooked up figures to steal about VND7 billion ($333,000) between 2006 and August 2013.

The District 1 Police handed over Minh to the HCM City's Police Department of Criminal Investigation in Economic Management and Position for further investigation of the case.
