With 35 taxi firms, HCM City has around 13,000 cabs. Though taxis account for only 2.6 percent of the city’s total number of cars, surveys show that taxis make up 46 percent of cars in circulation.
On the roads of Bui Thi Xuan, Ton That Tung, Hai Ba Trung, Pasteur, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, Cong Quynh, Nguyen Trai, Nam Ky Khoi Nghia, Tran Hung Dao, Suong Nguyet Anh, etc., the density of taxis is always crowded. Taxis also park on the road, hindering traffic.
HCM City has stopped licensing new taxi firms but taxi firms from neighboring provinces send their cars to the city.
In the city’s transportation development plan to 2020, HCM City plans to have 9,500 cabs by 2015 and 12,700 by 2020. However, by early 2010, the number was over 12,500.
In the Ministry of Transport’s inspection of tax firms in HCM City, two firms were suspended.
