VietNamNet Bridge – Up to 65 out of 79 buildings in HCM City do not have adequate parking space. As a result, vehicles have to park on the pavement--causing traffic disorder, said the director of the HCM City Department of Transport, Tran Quang Phuong.

Phuong said that early this year, the HCM City People’s Committee asked districts and the Department of Construction to not grant construction licenses to buildings and apartments that do not have abundant parking space.

Phuong said that HCM City’s projects to build underground carparks run very slowly or stand idle because of formalities. According to him, two underground carpark projects will be kicked off this year, offering room for 3,500 motorbikes and 4,900 cars.

Deputy Director of the city’s Police Agency, Ngo Minh Chau, said that traffic police will fine traffic violators through cameras.

He said that the local traffic police force is using 10 cameras. This year they will have an addition 15 cameras. In addition, the city will buy more alcohol testers and speed measurers this year.

Training more traffic police officers is also an urgent task. From 2008 to the end of 2012, the city will have an additional of 1,000 traffic police officers.
