VietNamNet Bridge – In the early 20th century, men did not put their hair in a bun anymore. Sandals and shoes became popular and the shoe repair appeared as a new job. Today, Saigonees still maintain essentially cultural traits of the early 20th century.

In the early 20th century (1910-1903), men did not put their hair in chignon anymore.
They began to cut their hair short. Peddling barbers appeared. Nowadays, besides
luxurious barber’s shops, one can still see peddling barbers on Saigon’s pavements.
They sit under the shadow of trees and still use simple tools.

Taxis appeared in Saigon in the 1940s and boomed in the 1950s. In the photo is
a taxi in 1970 and a today taxi.

Old Saigon had tea shops on the pavement, which still exist today.

Postmen appeared in Saigon in the early 20th century and they mainly walked to do
their job. At that time, the southern region still had many jungles so this was a
dangerous job. Today, communications is very easy.

Hu tiu (noodle) vendors have worked in Saigon for over 100 years. They seem to not
change. Today, many hu tiu restaurants of over 50 years old still open in Cho Lon,
 Trieu Quang Phuc, Gia Phu…

Peddling is still a cultural trait of Saigon.

Shoe repair appeared in the early 20th century and it has become
one of the oldest manual jobs in Saigon.
