A murder occurred in the northern province of Bac Giang last week. The killer was very young – 16 years old, a 10th grader of the continuation education center in Luc Nam district.

On January 18, Hoa, the student, asked Hien, a classmate, to meet outside the school after the school hours. When the two were in quarrel, Nguyen Thi Ha, an 11th grader, came and tried to dissuade them from fighting each other. Hoa then stabbed Ha with a knife, and then stabled Hien as well. Ha died at hospital later, while Hien was seriously injured.

Prior to that, three cases of students stabbing others occurred just within one month. The noteworthy thing was that the cases occurred right in school and dormitories, the places put under the strict control of the schools.

On December 19, 2012, a murder was conducted at the Hanoi University of Business and Technology. The victim was Vu Ngoc Cuong, born in 1992, a student from Bac Ninh province, a good and obedient student.

Those who got involved in the murder were the three students, aged 21-22, also the students of the school.

Just because of the minor disagreements, in May 2012, Le Thi Ha Trang, a 9th grader in My Duc district in Hanoi, tried to use a knife to “talk” with a group of students of the same school.

The result of the “discussion” was that a female student, Tran Thi Hoai, born in 1997, was stabbed to death, while another student was hospitalized in a serious status.

In June 2012, a 9th grader of the Tan Ha Secondary School in Lam Dong province stabbed a classmate into the chest, causing an immediate death.

The violence cases which occurred continuously have raised big worries among students and their parents.

School environment unsafe

Tran Van Tan, a parent who has a daughter studying at the University of Business and Technology, said that he feels unsecure about the school environment where there are so many evils now.

Tan said the school violence cases recently have stricken students with consternation. “Students would not feel secure when going to school, because they don’t know what will happen with them,” he said.

The parent went on to say that students and their parents would turn their backs to the schools with unsafe learning environment. “Our children have the right to study in a safe academic environment,” he said.

No once could imagine that a murder would take place right in a school. “We thought that school is a safe environment for our children. We now feel very worried, because we think higher risks would lurk our children outside the school,” Pham Thu Huong, a parent said.

“Before the students left Hanoi for Thai Nguyen to attend the internship at a Thai Nguyen business school, I told my daughter to leave valuable things at home, because I feel it is unsafe in Thai Nguyen. However, I could not imagine that a murder would occur,” another parent said.

Nguyen Van An, a student of the school, said he witnessed the case with his eyes and he now still feels stunned about the case.

“No such a case happened at our school so far. Therefore, the murder has caused a shock to the students,” An said.

Thu Trang, also a student of the school, said her classmates have gathered their wits after the case, but all of them still have not got ready to return to school to attend the internship.
