2G phones disappearing
Head of the Ministry of Information and Communication’s (MIC) Authority of Telecommunications (AOT) Nguyen Thanh Phuc said since March 1, telecom carriers have not allowed mobile phones not included in the list of 2G phones with Certificate Regulation (CR) announced by MIC.
According to AOT, 1,500 units have been granted CR for mobile phones supported only by 2G technology.
Phuc explained that the 2G mobile phones without CR that joined the networks prior to March 1 can operate as usual.
AOT said that from September 2024 to September 2026, the 2G system will be reserved for voice and messaging services using 3G and 4G mobile phones with no support in VoLTE technology.
As such, subscribers using 2G mobile phones won’t be able to use the 2G system on the 900MHz bandwidth. From September 2026, the 2G system will be stopped.
