The agreement was reached during a review meeting in Hanoi on June 8 between the Vietnam Sports Administration (VSA) under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the Vietnam Olympic Committee.
Tran Duc Phan, Deputy General Director of the Vietnam Sports Administration, said the delay is the best option given the complex nature of the COVID-19 pandemic in Vietnam and other countries in the region.
Meanwhile, Tran Van Manh, General Secretary of the Vietnam Olympic Committee, reported that the committee had sent a document to members of the Executive Committee of the Southeast Asian Games Federation for opinions on the organisation of the two sporting events in line with the developments of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Southeast Asian Games Federation is set to hold an online meeting with the participation of members of regional countries to examine Vietnam’s proposal and make a decision.
SEA Games 31, the largest sporting event in Southeast Asia, is scheduled to take place in Hanoi capital and 11 other localities in Vietnam this November. However, the complicated developments of the COVID-19 pandemic is negatively affecting the preparations for the competition.
