The result sees the Philippines become the first team to advance from the group stage, while Indonesia now face elimination, having earned no points and holding a goal difference of -1.
Indonesia’s only hope lies in their final match against Myanmar U22 (also on 0 points, with a -2 goal difference) on December 12 - a must-win fixture. Even then, their fate remains uncertain.
According to tournament rules, the three group winners and the best second-place team qualify for the semi-finals of men’s football at SEA Games 33.
Vietnam U22 and Malaysia U22 are currently tied on three points in Group B, with Malaysia ahead on goal difference. The two teams will face off in a decisive match on December 11.
For Vietnam, avoiding defeat will be enough to reach the semi-finals. A draw would see both Vietnam and Malaysia progress.
Complicating matters for other teams, second-place finishers in Groups A and C can earn a maximum of only three points. If Singapore fails to beat Thailand in Group A, and the match between Indonesia and Myanmar ends in a draw in Group C, Vietnam could still go through even if they lose to Malaysia.
Despite the favorable odds, head coach Kim Sang Sik has called for maximum focus. During recent training sessions, the South Korean tactician has put his players through a range of attacking drills to sharpen their offensive play.
Vietnam U22 are clearly confident in their ability to defeat Malaysia and top Group B en route to the semi-finals of SEA Games 33.
