VietNamNet Bridge – The victory of gymnastics and Vovinam (Vietnamese martial arts) and nine gold medals were the highlight of the Vietnamese sports delegation on the third day of the Southeast Asian Games 2011.

At the end of November 14, Vietnam had 26 gold, 30 silver and 35 bronze medals, ranking third. The host – Indonesia and Thailand ranked first and second.

Track and field: the team won two more gold medals by three-step jumper Tran Hue Hoa and javelin thrower Nguyen Truong Giang, raising the total gold medals to six.

The audience expected to see runner Vu Thi Huong to win at women’s 200m event, after her failure to win gold medal at women’s 100 event on November 13. However, the Queen of Speed finished third. The 26th SEA Games is a difficult time for Huong.

Gymnastics: After the success of the men’s group in the first day, the women’s group performed well on November 14. Nguyen Thi Ha Thanh, who recently won the world bronze medal, won a gold medal while “Doll” Ngan Thuong won a silver medal though she left the national gymnastic team for eight months.

Vovinam: the foursome including Nguyen Binh Dinh, Nguyen Van Cuong, Phan Ngoc Toi and Huynh Khac Nguyen won a gold medal with 275 points while Tran Khanh Trang (women’s 50kg) and Vo Quyen Linh (men’s 55kg) won two more golds.

Wrestling: Khong Van Khoa took the championship at men’s under 74kg after defeating his rival 5-0.

Fencing: Tran Thi Len received a gold medal for épée, in the final game against an Indonesian rival.




Wall climbing: Climber Phan Thanh Nhien won a silver medal. This sport is very new in Vietnam.

Pantenque: Danh Sa Phanl won a silver medal in men’s single event.

Shooting: Shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh won the 18th gold medal for Vietnam in men’s 10m airgun while Tran Quoc Cuong won a bronze medal for the same event.

Vinh is a senior member of the Vietnamese national shooting team. He has participated in seven SEA Games and always won gold medals.

Sepak Takraw: The Vietnamese team ranked second, behind Thailand.
