A second student had died from Monday's shooting rampage at Chardon High School in Ohio, local media reported Tuesday.
4 students wounded in U.S. high school shooting
Russell King Jr., 17, was declared brain dead early Tuesday at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio, where he was treated after suffering serious wounds in the shooting on campus, about 30 miles east of Cleveland, local news outlet WKYC-TV reported.
A teen gunman, identified by local paper Cleveland Plain Dealer as student T.J. Lane, brought a .22-caliber handgun into the school cafeteria and started shooting just after 7:30 a.m. Five students were shot at three locations within the school.
One of the victims, 16-year-old Daniel Parmertor, was pronounced dead Monday and three others are still being treated at area hospitals, with one listed in critical condition.
While authorities declined to speculate on the motive behind the attack, local media quoted Lane's classmates describing him as an "outcast" who has apparently been bullied.
Lane also tweeted he would bring a gun to school, but nobody took him seriously.
A lawyer for the Lane family issued a statement offering "their most heartfelt and sincere condolences" to the families of the victims.
The deadliest high school shooting in U.S. history occurred in 1999 at Columbine High School in Colorado, where two senior students killed 12 students and one teacher before committing suicide.
