The National Assembly approved a resolution ratifying the appointment at its ongoing session in Hanoi on June 6. The new security minister received support of 468 out of 469 National Assembly deputies present at the plenary session on June 6.
The resolution was approved on request of the Prime Minister who had nominated Sen. Lieut. Gen. Luong Tam Quang as Minister of Public Security.
The new minister will succeed General To Lam who was earlier elected President of Vietnam.
Quang, 59, hails from Hung Yen province, northern Vietnam. He has graduated from the People’s Police Academy and held many positions in the security industry.
He was appointed as Deputy Minister of Public Security in 2019 and head of the Investigation Police Agency of the Ministry of Public Security in 2020.
He was promoted to the rank of Major General in 2015, Lieutenant General in 2019 and Senior Lieutenant General in 2022.
He was elected to the Party Central Committee for the 2021-2026 tenure in 2021.
