The transfer of power has been seen recently in many different fields

Several days before the Vietnam’s Businesspeople’s Day on October 13, DOJI, a large gold, silver and gemstone company, appointed Do Vu Phuong Anh, the daughter of DOJI’s founder Do Minh Phu, to the post of general director of the group.

Anh, born in 1980, graduated from the Finance and Banking Faculty of Hanoi Economics University and got an MBA from the University of Hawaii in the US before returning to Vietnam and joining DOJI’s board of management.

Anh has many years of experience in business and human resource administration. Before becoming the general director of DOJI, she was deputy general director in charge of human resources and systematic reform of Diana JSC, and deputy general director in charge of personnel and operation of DOJI Group.

Anh later obtained a doctorate in business administration from Hanoi National University and a second international master’s degree from Swiss Hotel Management School, belonging to Swiss Education.

Minh Duc, the second son of Phu, also is a talented businessman. He obtained a bachelor’s degree from City University in the UK, then a master’s degree in marketing from Westminster. DOJI said that the appointment of Duc to the post of permanent vice president aims to promote the strategic leadership role for the economic group, especially in 2024-2029 when DOJI Group turns 30 years old.

Duc is seen to be a ‘shining heir’ of DOJI, who has held important positions in the group, from business director and deputy CEO to deputy chair and CEO. He is the creator of the marketing strategies for the group followed over the last 15 years.

DOJI now has 15 subsidiaries with hundreds of jewelry business centers and sales agents throughout the country and annual turnover of VND100 trillion a year.

Analysts note that Vietnam now has powerful private companies which have been expanding their scale in recent years with capitalization of billions of dollars. The developed businesses have been transferred to the first generation of offspring.

In mid-September, Vuu Tuan Kiet, the only son of the owner, was named to the post of managing director of the family-run real estate firm. Gifted and well-trained in music, Kiet, however, studied business professionally in the UK and Beijing in 2013-2016.

The transfer of power has also been seen recently in the finance and banking sector.

After the 2023 annual shareholders’ meeting, Do Quang Vinh, the son of Do Quang Hien, dubbed ‘Boss Hien’, has become vice president of the Saigon – Hanoi Bank (SHB) for the 2022-2027 tenure.

Hien remains the president of the bank, while Vinh is believed to be the ideal candidate for the post of president once Hien resigns.

Vinh, born in 1989, is a master’s degree holder majoring in finance and administration granted by the University of East Anglia in the UK. He has 12 years of experience in the finance and banking sector after working in many businesses and banks overseas before returning to Vietnam in 2019. In 2021, Vinh became the youngest deputy CEO of SHB.

Vinh was once among the leadership of SHB Finance, a subsidiary of SHB specializing in consumer financing. The company has been transferred to Thai Krungsri Bank at the rumoured price of $156 million.

At VietBank, the bank’s president since April 2021 is Duong Nhat Nguyen, born in 1983.

Nguyen’s education is impressive compared with the previous generation of businesspeople. He has a bachelor’s degree from Greenwich University, and master’s degree in business administration from Devry University in the US.

He became a member of the board of management of the bank in early 2013, holding the post of deputy CEO and has had important positions since then.

At Phuong Dong Bank, Trinh Thi Mai Anh, born in 1992, is well known as one of the few younger female senior executives in the banking sector. Anh graduated from London School of Economics and Political Science in the UK and once worked for HSBC in London, VinaCapital, and Temasek Singapore.

Tran Hung Huy, born in 1978, was the youngest bank president when he took the post in 2012, at the age of 34. He has bachelor’s degrees in three majors – business administration, finance and international business. He also has a master’s degree from Chapman University and a doctorate from Golden Gate in the US.
