VietNamNet Bridge – The authorities of central province Binh Dinh have set up a pilot shark warning system along the coast of Quy Nhon city.

This system includes 1,200 meters of net, drift signals and signal lamps. This system surrounds the most crowded beach in Quy Nhon city, where several people were attacked by sharks.

From 2009 to 2011, at least ten cases in which swimmers were attacked by sharks in Binh Dinh.

In 2010, the Ministry of Science and Technology assigned the Nha Trang Oceanography Institute to research and design shark prevention fishing equipment for Binh Dinh. The institute has introduced the fishing net-hook system, which has been installed on a trial basis in Quy Nhon city.

Dr. Vo Si Tuan, vice director of the institute, says that the project will be checked and taken over by the Ministry of Science and Technology in late April.

Tuan analyzes that sharks attacked man in Quy Nhon because the following factors: Quy Nhon bay has a deep passage; the development of fish cages near the beach attracted shark. Attacks by sharks coincided with the time of El Nino, meaning that the change of weather made sharks crueler.

Researchers propose some measures to prevent attacks of sharks.

They also point out 23 species of fish that can appear in Quy Nhon, including three species of sharks that can attack man.

Experts say that in Vietnam, many territorial waters have no longer had sharks. This is the popular situation in other countries. Shark preservation has become a goal of many international organizations.

According to the Nha Trang Oceanography Institute, Quy Nhon Bay in Binh Dinh is the destination of various species of sharks.
