Two designs for APEC officials by designer Thu Ha

The attire will be worn by the leaders of the 21 APEC economies at some activities, including official photographs and diplomatic and cultural events, Vi Kien Thanh, Director of the Department of Fine Arts, Photography and Exhibition under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said on April 26.

In late 2016, the department invited six designers and units to design the attire. The four shortlisted designs, including two for men and two for women, are created by designer Thu Ha and the Thai Tuan Group Corporation.

All four designs feature lotus, which is considered the national flower of Vietnam, as key patterns. They convey Vietnam’s traditional culture and modernity, Thanh noted.

Containers of the attire were also created, meant to serve as a gift to the APEC leaders.

Thanh noted that when the official designs are selected, Vietnam will ask the 21 member economies for the leaders’ measurements.

Established in 1989, APEC comprises 21 economies, namely Australia; Brunei; Canada; Chile; China; Hong Kong, China; Indonesia; Japan; the Republic of Korea; Malaysia; Mexico; New Zealand; Papua New Guinea; Peru; the Philippines; Russia; Singapore; Chinese Taipei; Thailand; the United States; and Vietnam.

Vietnam joined APEC in 1998, and hosted APEC for the first time in 2006.

It is hosting the APEC Vietnam 2017 under the theme “Creating New Dynamism, Fostering A Shared Future.” The APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting is slated for November in central Da Nang city.
