Both nations expressed their satisfaction with positive developments in defence ties through delegation exchange and naval cooperation at their defence policy dialogue in Hanoi on July 22.

At the dialogue, Deputy Defence Minister Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh and Chan Yeng Kit Permanent Secretary for Singaporean Defence Ministry agreed to maintain deputy ministerial dialogue mechanisms, share information and UN peace keeping force building experiences and step up medical army cooperation and consultation and coordination at multilateral forums.

Lieutenant General Vinh thanked Singapore for helping Vietnam in the military modernization process, especially in the area of foreign language training, peacekeeping, and search and rescue operations.

Vinh asked the two defence ministries to build a long-term cooperation plan in the next three years to implement signed defense cooperation agreements more effectively.

The two sides also compared notes on the East Sea issue and agreed that the dispute must be resolved by peaceful measures in line with international law.

They underscored the need to reinforce solidarity as well as enhance ASEAN's central role in maintaining regional peace and stability.
