VietNamNet Bridge - Since early this month, masses of civil servants and other residents in the ancient town of Hoi An only pedal to get around in the old quarter.

The Hoi An City Party Committee has encouraged public servants and people to travel by bicycle starting from April 2014. Every day about 4,000 civil servants, teachers, students and tourists now use bicycles in the city.

Mr. Nguyen Su, Party Secretary of Hoi An says: “People love Hoi An because it is peaceful and unhurried. Were Hoi An not a quiet place, there would no longer be a Hoi An."

According to Su, using bikes in Hoi An is the modern way of life, which is manifest in friendliness to the environment, reduction of traffic accidents and lower noise pollution.

Two years ago, Hoi An became the first location in Vietnam to launch a “Car Free Day". According to locals, the perimeter of the old town is only about 6km2, so biking is the best choice to do exercise, reduce noise and protect the environment.

Across the roads in the ancient town of Hoi An, visitors see many bike rental shops, with the low price of VND40,000 ($2) per day.
