VietNamNet Bridge – Thanks to the fast growth of mobile devices, smartphones are being increasingly used to access the internet but laptops and desktops still dominate.

According to an online survey conducted by the market-research company Epinion Viet Nam in mid-October, 75 per cent of internet users used laptops to access the internet, followed by desktops with 54 per cent.

The survey polled more than 1,200 people from all socio-economic classes across the country aged 15 to 45. Fifty-four per cent of respondents were women, and the remaining were men.

Smartphones and iPads were used by 47 per cent and 19 per cent of internet users, respectively.

A total of 90 per cent of respondents went online every week day besides other indoor activities such as watching movies, reading, working and sleeping.

The rate dropped by 20 per cent at weekends when outdoor activities such as shopping and dining out were more common.

Office workers and housewives often go online during the day, while the frequency of students going online tends to double at the end of the day from around 8pm to midnight.

Nearly 20 per cent of internet users said they accessed the net in cafe shops and restaurants where wi-fi is available.

Reading news, checking mail, searching for information and interacting in social networks were among the popular activities online, the report said.

Most internet users have social-network accounts, of which 99 per cent use Facebook, according to the survey.

Fifty per cent of the internet community are members of fanpages or clubs, mostly entertainment pages and those with a common hobby or concern, the survey found.

Nearly 50 per cent of internet users shop online, mostly for personal care, electronics and household products, according to the survey.
