On the morning of December 28, the temperature in the northern mountainous provinces dropped sharply. In Lao Cai province, snow and rain began to fall at 5am and lasted for 3 hours, covering the area from an altitude of 2,800m to the peak of Fansipan Mountain.

Mr. Luu Minh Hai, former director of the Lao Cai Provincial Hydro-meteorological Station, said that the form of snow in Fansipan today is similar to that in February 2021. It is expected that in the following days, snow and rain will continue to fall and cover the roof of Indochina.

During this cold spell, the lowest temperature in the North is 10-13 degrees Celsius, 6-9 degrees Celsius in the northern mountainous areas, below 3 degrees Celsius in some places the high mountains, and 13-16 degrees Celsius in the area from Nghe An to Thua Thien-Hue.

The ongoing air wave has intensified, causing temperatures to plummet below zero early on December 28.
This is the first snowfall on Fansipan peak this winter.
