Bird flu epidemic spreads to Haiphong
The newest bird flu hot spot has been detected in the northern port city of Haiphong, said the Animal Health Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on February 12.

The local veterinary sector has taken necessary measures as stipulated.
As a result, the epidemic has spread to six localities across the country, namely Thanh Hoa, Quang Tri, Soc Trang, Ha Nam, Hai Duong and Haiphong.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has set up seven inspection teams to monitor epidemic prevention in 48 provinces and cities nationwide, including Hanoi.
It has also asked relevant ministries and local administrations to respond to the national month for disinfecting the environment from February 15 to March 15 to forestall epidemics in fowl and cattle.
Man caught with $110,000 on entering Vietnam
A Vietnamese-American passenger, Dinh Tom, was caught carrying US$110,000 in cash without reporting it to customs when he arrived at Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City yesterday, Feb 13.
Customs officers found the money in the luggage of the 35-year-old man, who took flight KE 683 from South Korea to HCMC on Monday.
Under the State Bank of
Vietnam’s regulation, from September 1, 2011, the carrying of more than $5,000
in cash, or an equivalent amount in other foreign currencies, when leaving or
entering Vietnam must be reported to customs for resolution.
The customs officers let Tom keep $5,000 with him and made an administrative
violations report to retain the additional $105,000.
The case has been referred to the Airport Customs Sub-department for handling
according to applicable regulations.
HCM City market busy for Valentine’s Day

of 40 percent.
Big C supermarket chain has
also launched a number of promotional programs with more than 100 romantic
products for Valentine’s Day.
On the occasion, Sacombank Jewelry company (SBJ) has offered a 30 percent
discount on its jewelry products.
Meanwile, Phu Nhuan Jewelry company (PNJ) has also given customers a discount
of 15 percent on diamond products and is marketing a new collection, “Dream of
Love” with almost 100 multiform designs for young couples.
Road safety week launched in Quang Ninh
A Road Safety Week was launched in Ha Long City in the northern province of Quang Ninh on February 13.
The activity is part of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) funded project, “Strengthening Road Safety of National Highways in Northern Vietnam ”.
During the Week, which will last until February 17, a Road Safety Law contest and an exhibition on road safety and road accidents will be held at high schools and residential areas in Ha Long city.
The JICA-funded project is being implemented in Quang Ninh and nine other northern provinces and cities.
