Illegal Chinese fisheries workers deported

Khanh Hoa Province People's Committee has ordered Cam Ranh City People's Committee to check all foreign workers employed illegally in fish raising enterprises by the end of June.

A report released recently by the provincial People's Committee said the province wanted to create favourable conditions for individuals, organisations or enterprises to invest and work in the province, but their activities must be legal.

Recently, 23 Chinese workers were found illegally rearing fish and trading in Van Phong and Cam Ranh Bay. Two of them were employed by Song Phong Ltd.

To date, seven illegal Chinese workers have been deported.

Pituitary tumor linked to Vietnam’s tallest man

A man in the southern province of Dong Nai was 1.90m tall at just 18 years old and reached a height of 2.03m at the age of 21, but strangely he has never stopped growing in height since then.

21-year-old D.T.D is believed to be the tallest-ever man in Vietnam. His school friends gave him the nickname Peter Crouch, England’s tallest football player, who stands at 2.01m.

Dr. Tran Quang Khanh at the Endocrinology Unit of Ho Chi Minh City-based Nguyen Tri Phuong Hospital has diagnosed him with Gigantism, the consequence of which is abnormally large growth due to an excess of growth hormones caused by a 10mm benign tumor in the pituitary gland.

In addition to the abnormally gigantic height, his jaw bone is also damaged as a result of the rare condition.

Doctors at the hospital said that those with Gigantism often develop complications like diabetes, high blood pressure, and arthritis, among others.

For the disease, surgery is the treatment of choice, they added.

D. is expected to have his tumor operated on next week to prevent complications from developing.

D. rarely leaves home because he is afraid of what people will think if they see him.

"When I go out people look at me strangely and curiously and it makes me feel nervous about my appearance,” he said.

D. said he has difficulty sleeping and choosing clothes because he cannot find a “suitable size”.

Smuggling of animal organs difficult to stop

Authorities in northern border Lang Son Province have busted dozens of cases of illegal transport of animal organs, with nearly 50 tonnes of goods confiscated since the beginning of the year.

The smuggling in Lang Son Province is reported to be getting more complicated and difficult to control.

Animal organs illegally transported from China often do not meet food safety standards and contain toxic chemicals, which poses a threat to the safety of customers.

In response, local authorities have stepped up inspections and imposed stricter punishments for violators. This has partly reduced the circulation of these illegal goods within the country.

Efforts to ease traffic jams unsuccessful

Traffic jams are continuing to cause huge headaches for motorists despite efforts by authorities to ease congested streets, according to Nguyen Xuan Tan, deputy director of the city Transport Department.

A report by traffic authorities says that 89 traffic jam hot-spots across the capital city are bringing traffic to a halt, and not only during rush hours.

The city aims to reduce congestion hot-spots by at least 20 per cent during the 2012-15 period by improving public transport services and building at least 10 parking lots each year in residential and urban areas.
