Under this decision, six provinces under inspection include Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan, Dak Lak, Dak Nong, Binh Phuoc, and Bac Lieu.

Which province has the highest number of solar power projects?

By the end of 2020, the total capacity of grid-connected solar power and rooftop solar power was 16,500MW. Of which, the grid-connected solar power source put into operation was up to nearly 9,000MW (Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan provinces account for more than 3,500MW) and the remaining 8,000MW was rooftop solar power. Notably, the nationwide capacity of rooftop solar power was only 272MW in 2019.

Meanwhile, in the adjusted Power Master Plan VII, the total capacity of concentrated and rooftop solar power is only set to be about 850 MW in 2020, about 4,000 MW in 2025 and about 12,000 MW in 2030.

With 16,500MW of solar power put into operation so far, the actual solar power capacity has far exceeded the goal set in the revised Power Master Plan VII.

Meanwhile, many solar power projects have not yet operated. Specifically, the capacity of solar power projects that have been added to the planning is over 15,400MW.

In the list of solar power projects that have been operated, added to the Power Master Plan VII and those are under research of the six provinces, Dak Lak tops for the total number of projects but Ninh Thuan ranks first for the number of operating projects.

Solar power projects in Ninh Thuan have a total capacity of 6,792 MW. As many as 32 projects with a total capacity of 2,600 MW have been put into operation. The largest projects are Trung Nam, Bim (more than 400MW), Xuan Thien - Thuan Bac (250MW), and CMX Renewable Energy VN (168MW).

Solar power projects in Binh Thuan have a total capacity of 6,495MW. Of which, 25 projects have been operated with a total capacity of more than 1,345MW. The largest projects are Hong Phong 1A and 1B plants with a capacity of 325MW.

The total capacity of solar power projects in Dak Lak province is up to 24,090MW, but only six projects have been put into operation with a total capacity of 910MW. Notably, the EaSup solar power project alone has a capacity of up to 720MW.

Dak Nong has a total capacity of 3,553MW of solar power. But there are only two solar power projects operating with a capacity of more than 100MW.

Binh Phuoc has 6,994 MW of solar power in total, but only two projects are in operation: Loc Ninh and Loc Ninh solar power phase 2. Loc Ninh solar power project has a huge capacity, up to 750MW.

Wind power exceeds plan

The total capacity of operating wind power projects in the country is more than 4,000MW. However, the number of wind power projects added to planning and under research is large. In the adjusted Power Master Plan VII, the total capacity of wind power sources is only set to about 800 MW in 2020, about 2,000 MW in 2025 and about 6,000 MW in 2030.

The total capacity of wind power projects added to the planning by December 2020 was up to 12,000MW (in the revised Power Master Plan VII it is only 850MW), which is expected to be put into operation in the period of 2021-2025.

The total scale of onshore and nearshore wind power registered for investment but not added to the planning by December 2020 is up to nearly 105,000MW.

Compared with the adjusted Power Master Plan VII, the current wind power capacity is close to the proposed level until 2030.

The list of onshore and nearshore wind power projects tha operate, approved for additional planning, and under investment research is up to hundreds of thousands of MW.

Ninh Thuan has 3,046MW of wind power in this list. The operating projects have a total capacity of 622MW, including Mui Dinh (37.6MW); Trung Nam (151.95 MW); Dam Nai Ninh Thuan (39.38 MW); Wind Power Plant No. 5 (46.2MW); Wind Power Plant 7A (50MW); BIM (88MW); Win Energy Chinh Thang (49.8MW); Phuoc Minh (27.2MW); Phuoc Huu - Duyen Hai 1 (29.7MW); Hanbaram (24MW); Loi Hai 2 (28.8MW); Dak Hoa (49.5MW).

Binh Thuan has 1,119MW of wind power. The operating projects have a total capacity of 338MW, including: Binh Thuan wind power project 1 (phase 1) (30 MW); Phu Lac (24 MW); Dai Phong (40 MW); Hong Phong 1 (40 MW); Phu Lac Phase 2 (25.2 MW); Thai Hoa (90 MW); Ham Cuong 2 (20 MW); Tan Phu Dong (50 MW); and Thuan Nhien Phong (19 MW).

Dak Lak has 17,548MW on this list. Of which, two projects operate with a capacity of more than 428MW.

Dak Nong has 967MW in this list but all wind power projects have yet to operate.

Binh Phuoc has not recorded any wind power projects under operation.

Bac Lieu does not have any solar power projects in operation, but there is a gas power project that attracts a lot of attention, namely Bac Lieu 3,200MW gas power project with an investment capital of up to 4 billion USD.

This province also has many wind power projects supplemented to the planning, under research with a total capacity of 6,782MW, of which many projects are put into operation, such as Bac Lieu (99.2MW); Dong Hai 1 Bac Lieu (50MW), Hoa Binh 1 phase (50MW), Dong Hai 1 phase 2 (50MW), Kosy Bac Lieu (40MW); Hoa Binh 2 (50MW), Hoa Binh 5 phase 1 (80MW).

The data shows that solar power and wind power have grown much stronger than the numbers set in the revised Power Master Plan VII.
