VietNamNet Bridge – The number of students, who attempted to commit suicide after they failed the university entrance exams, has been increasing.

Thousands of students now can sigh with relief as they have finished the high school final exams and the university entrance exams. However, it is now the most difficult time for the students, who fail the exams. A lot of them attempt to commit suicide, because they cannot survive the hard pressures put on them by families and relatives.

The stories of the past

On July 1, 2005, Le Thi T, born in 1985, jumped from Ben Thuy Bridge to the Lam River in Ha Tinh province to kill herself. The body of T was only found two days later.

T was recognized as an excellent student in history for the last two years 2003 and 2004, but she failed the university entrance exams. Therefore, T decided to end her life.

One month later, local newspapers related that Tran Duy H, born in 1987, garroted himself after realizing that he failed the university entrance exams. At 5pm of August 2, H called his mother: “Mother, I am gone”. The mother thought that he asked for the permission to go out with friend. However, just 15 minutes later, she realized that the boy committed suicide and fell unconscious.

In Nam Dinh City, on August 14, 2006, Nguyen Thi Dieu T, born in 1988, also committed suicide after realizing that she failed the exams.

On August 20, 2009, in Nghe An province, Nguyen Thi V, born in 1991, ate toxic leaves to kill herself, because she felt too disappointed about the exam’s result.

One year ago, on July 7, 2010, H, born in 1992, drank weed killer just because she did not receive the notice on university entrance exam. Especially, in July 2010, Trinh Cong S, an excellent student of Le Khiet High School for the Gifted in Quang Ngai province, committed suicide because he could not finish doing the exam questions.

The sad stories of 2011

The incident occurred on the morning of July 10, 2011, at the exam room located at Lomonosov School in Hanoi. Just 15 minutes after the exam questions were delivered to examinees, invigilators discovered a female student who brought documents with herself to the exam room, and asked the student to stop doing exam questions.

The students, who got panic, ran out of the exam room, tried to jump into the ground to commit suicide. However, luckily, the invigilators could prevent her from doing the foolish thing. The student, when led to the healthcare room, cried very loudly.

Dr Nguyen Van Dung from the Mental Health Hospital said that in the post-exam season, every day he has to exam tens of people, aged 17-18, suffering the diseases relating to mental disorder.

Dung said that he is now treating TN, a female student from Tuyen Quang, who has suffered from symptoms of neurological disorders after she attended the university entrance exams. N was an excellent student, who people believe will pass the exams to the Hanoi University of Technology.

N has been in great fear after she returned from the mathematics exam. She said that she wrongly did a mathematics question. Her status became worse after she finished all the three exams, because she thought that she would not have the chance to study at universities. N’s mother had no other choice than bringing her to the hospital, where the treatment has helped her a lot.

Dr Dung said that the students have been put under a too hard pressure from families, and they want to continue studying at universities at any cost. And when they cannot fulfill the dream, they do not want to live.

H, though having a medium learning capability, still cherishes the dream of studying at university. One day, H met a person, who promised to arrange a seat at a university for H, if H accepted to pay tens of millions of dong. H’s parents were very poor, but they still tried to borrow 10 million dong to give to H, hoping that H would be able to pass the exams.

After realizing that he was cheated, H felt sorry for the parents, who had to borrow money at exorbitant high interest rates, and he decided to commit suicide. Luckily, H was hospitalized and rescued.
