The Southern Airports Authority has issued important guidance for passengers traveling through Tan Son Nhat International Airport during the peak period of Tet (Lunar New Year) 2026, when both flight frequency and passenger numbers are expected to reach record highs.

According to forecasts, on the 26th and 27th days of the twelfth lunar month and again on the sixth and seventh days of the first lunar month, Tan Son Nhat will experience its heaviest traffic, with aircraft taking off or landing at intervals of just over one minute.

The information was shared by Tran Van Hoach, Head of the Department for Aviation Service Quality and Transport Supervision at the Southern Airports Authority, during Ho Chi Minh City’s socio-economic press briefing on February 5.

Mr. Hoach said that, based on annual averages, the Tet peak season typically spans 15 days before and after Lunar New Year.

During Tet 2026, Tan Son Nhat is expected to handle an average of around 940 flights per day, up about 7% compared with Tet 2025.

Average daily passenger volume is forecast at approximately 145,000 travelers, an increase of nearly 8% year-on-year.

Airlines predict that the busiest pre-Tet travel days will fall on February 13 and 14 (the 26th and 27th days of the twelfth lunar month), when the number of flights could reach 1,015 per day, compared with 1,003 flights on the corresponding peak days last year.

Post-Tet traffic is expected to peak on February 22 and 23 (the sixth and seventh days of the first lunar month), with up to 1,027 flights per day.

Based on aviation indicators, the busiest single day could see around 165,000 passengers, meaning that on average there will be more than one aircraft movement per minute at the airport.

The Southern Airports Authority said it has promptly implemented plans issued by the Ministry of Construction, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, and the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction to ensure security, traffic safety and smooth passenger movement during the Tet peak.

Measures include early coordination of takeoff and landing slots to help airlines plan ticket sales, as well as staffing and operational plans by ground service providers to meet year-end travel demand.

Compared with last year, Tet 2026 will see Tan Son Nhat put its new domestic Terminal T3 into operation.

Six airlines will operate from Terminal T3: Vietnam Airlines, Pacific Airlines, Bamboo Airways, Vietravel Airlines, Vasco, and Sun PhuQuoc Airways.

Meanwhile, Vietjet will continue operating domestic flights from the existing Terminal T1, while Terminal T2 will maintain international flight operations as usual.

Given these changes, the Southern Airports Authority strongly advises passengers to carefully check which terminal their flight departs from to avoid going to the wrong terminal during the busy Tet travel period.
