The former Spice Girl said she was "so excited" to be coming back and is reported to have signed a deal worth £1 million.

The 39-year-old appeared as a guest judge on the show in 2012.

"I've always thought honesty is the best policy when being a judge and that's what I'm going to bring more of this year," she said.

"Whether it's spotting an incredible singer, giving someone a reality check or debating with Simon over who's got it wrong.

"Now I can't wait to get started and find some amazing talent."

Simon Cowell said he was "thrilled" by the appointment.

He said: "I thought she was fantastic as a guest judge a couple of years ago.

"She is feisty, opinionated and, I believe, will be a great mentor."

Mel B has also been on both the American and Australian versions of the programme.

As part of the Spice Girls, Mel B had nine number one singles and 80 million record sales worldwide.

It's also been announced that Dermot O'Leary will be returning as host for the new series.

The presenter said: "With Mel on the panel, along with Simon, Cheryl and Louis, I'll have my hands full - we're going to be in for an exciting year."

Cheryl Cole, 30, and show boss Simon Cowell, 54, revealed in March that they would revive their on-screen partnership for the ITV talent show after a four-year break.

Speaking to Radio 1's Breakfast Show host Nick Grimshaw, Cole said she would like another female judge on the panel.

She said: "I feel excited. I love the process. I like finding new talent. It's just as much of a buzz for me."

The former Girls Aloud singer also joked that she had put Cowell "through the ringer" to return.

Louis Walsh confirmed he was returning as a judge earlier this month.

Following the announcement that Mel B would be included the 61-year-old said: "It should be a fun year this year with both Simon and Cheryl returning and I think Mel will keep us all on our toes, she is Scary Spice after all."

Filming for the new series begins next week with an audition tour taking place in four cities across the UK - Manchester, London, Newcastle and Edinburgh.
