SEA Games 29: Malaysia leading medal tally

Hosts Malaysia overtook Indonesia to lead the medal table at the 29th Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 29) with three gold, two silver and one bronze medals on August 17.

Indonesia is second with two gold and one bronze medals, followed by Myanmar with two gold medals.

Singapore collected one gold, two silver and two bronze medals, taking fourth place in the medal tally.

Thailand climbed one spot to fifth in the tally with one gold and one silver. Meanwhile, Vietnam added another silver to its medal collection, jumping to the sixth place.

Despite grabbing two more bronze medals on the second day, the Philippines dropped to seventh place, followed by Laos with one silver and one bronze.

Cambodia and Brunei each pocketed two bronzes, ranking ninth and tenth on the tally.

Timor Lester has not won any medals and remains rooted to the bottom of the table. 

Vietnam’s second silver was secured by the female archery team including Chau Kieu Oanh, Le Ngoc Huyen and Nguyen Thi Nhat Le after losing to Malaysian athletes in the women’s team compound final.

Vietnam aims to finish in the top three, with about 60 gold medals. In the previous Games in Singapore, Vietnam finished third, winning 73 medals.

Muay Thai fight night on Aug 18

The Muay Thai (Thai boxing) fight night will kick off on August 18 at the Military Zone 7 Gymnasium in HCM City.

The competition has been organised to help Vietnamese Muay martial artists get practice and improve their performance in preparation for the Southeast Asian Games in Malaysia.

It will see the participation of 12 players from China, South Korea, Chinese Taipei, Thailand and Viet Nam.

In one of the matches, Asian silver medallist Le Hoang Duc will face Thailand’s Chaiwit Suwannakul.

The event has been co-organised by Viet Nam California Fitness & Yoga and HCM City Muay Association.

Hoi An marathon to be held in September

The Hoi An International Marathon 2017 will be held on September 17, the event’s organising board has announced.

The marathon is expected to attract around 1,500 runners, mostly foreigners, who will compete in the 5km, 10km and 42km categories.

Participants will receive souvenir cups, medals, T-shirts and bags at the Centre for Culture and Sports, Hoi An City, in the central province of Quang Nam.

Viet Nam fifth in Asian volleyball event

Viet Nam finished fifth at the SMM 19th Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship in the Philippines yesterday.

The team beat Chinese Taipei 25-23, 25-22, 25-23 to settle for fifth place in the 14-team field.

At the previous edition in Tianjin, China two years ago, Viet Nam also finished fifth.

Earlier, Viet Nam scored an upset after defeating Kazakhstan, a leading Asian team.

Japanese coach Hidehiro Irisawa of Viet Nam said his team were very glad to beat Chinese Taipei.

Viet Nam now shift their focus to the Southeast Asian Games which officially begin in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Saturday. 

Berry wins sixth stage of Mekong race

Australian Josh Berry of Premium Cycling Vinh Long won his second consecutive stage of the Mekong Delta Cycling Tournament, the Hat Ngoc Troi Rice Cup, yesterday.

Berry beat Nguyen Huynh Phu Loc of the Military Zone 7 to triumph in the 114km sixth stage from Ca Mau to Soc Trang City in 2:44.35.

Le Van Duan of VUS-HCM City beat his teammate Nguyen Anh Khoa to come third.

Duan won 16 points in this stage to hold the green jersey as the best sprinter 99 total points.

The yellow jersey still belongs to Le Ngoc Son of Gao Hat Ngoc Troi-An Giang for the best overall time of 18:47.34 after six stages, followed by Pham Quoc Cuong of Calytos Dong Thap and Loic Desriac of Bike Life Dong Nai.

Calytos Dong Thap topped the team rankings with a time of 56: 25.58. Gao Hat Ngoc Troi-An Giang and Bike Life Dong Nai were the runners-up.

Today, cyclists will race the 93km final stage from Soc Trang to Vinh Long City in the morning and pedal 12 laps around Pham Thai Buong road of Vinh Long City, lasting 32km.
