New coach names U19 squad for Southeast Asian Championships

Coach Mai Duc Chung has selected 23 players for the national under-19 team who will compete at the coming South-east Asian Championships in HCM City.

The squad gathers four strikers, seven midfielders, nine defenders and three goalkeepers.

At the tournament, Viet Nam will play against teams from Iran, Australia and Uzbekistan. They are all considered stronger rivals.

However Chung and his players are confident and are determined to try their hardest in every game.

The opening ceremony is on Sunday while the final is scheduled for September 8.

2012 motor racing tourney concludes

Young racer Nguyen Viet Linh became champion of the 2012 national motor racing tournament, which ended in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho on September 2.    

The event had attracted 33 top racers from across the country into different groups for qualifying rounds. Four best candidates were selected for the final round.

Nguyen Viet Linh from Ho Chi Minh City finished first to win the champion title, followed by Nguyen Quang Khai also from HCM City and Nguyen Thanh Tung from An Giang province.

The tournament provided a good opportunity for local racers to hone their professional skills in preparation for regional and international events.

Asian Cup Volleyball Champs opens

The Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Asian Men’s Cup Volleyball Championship opened in Vinh Yen city in the northern province of Vinh Phuc on September 1.    

The biennial tournament gathers the leading men's volleyball teams in the Asian region. This year, eight teams are taking part in the competition including Australia, China, the Republic of Korea (RoK), Japan, Iran, India, Myanmar and Vietnam.

Matches will be broadcast live on the An Vien Television (Vietnam), CCTV (China), Korea Sports (RoK), Japan Sports ESPN (Japan), and Sports Australia (Australia) television channels.

After the opening ceremony, two-time defending champions Iran defeated China with a score of 3-2, and India lost to Australia 0-3.

Vietnam-Laos friendship golf tourney held

A Vietnam-Laos friendship golf tournament was held in Vientiane, Laos on September 1.

The event, organized by the Laos-Vietnam Friendship Association, attracted 200 golfers to compete in the spirit of friendship and solidarity.

President of the Association Phankham Viphavanh highlighted the friendship between the two countries and said they will do their utmost to nurture it.

The tournament celebrates the 67th anniversary of Vietnam’s National Day (September 2), the 50th anniversary of Vietnam-Laos diplomatic ties, and 35th year of signing their Friendship and Cooperation Treaty.
