Da Nang secure V-League win against Dong Tam at home

Captain Nguyen Minh Phuong and midfielder Doan Hung Son found the back of the net as Da Nang overcame Dong Tam Long An 2-0 at home in yesterday's late V-League fixture.

The visitors had the first chance 30 minutes into the game, but Brazilian Gilson Campos's shot went wide of the post.

The hosts responded positively, and they began to pose more of an attacking threat, piling pressure on the Long An defence. .

Minh Phuong, once a Long An player, scored a spectacular free kick from the box just before half time.

Long An responded well in the second half and would have equalised if striker Viet Thang's powerful shot had not swerved onto the post in the 68th minute.

However, three minutes before the final whistle, Son met Danny David's cross to stab the ball home, effectively sealing the win for the defending champions.

The result puts Da Nang fifth in the table, while Long An stay in tenth.

Da Nang will host their in-form rivals Song Lam Nghe An on Sunday.

Phuc ready to lead U23 team into latest friendlies

National team head coach Hoang Van Phuc has announced the list of 26 players in the U23 team for coming matches.

Vietnamese-Czech striker Mac Hong Quan will be a key player in the line-up. The team will have its first friendly match with Kashima Antlers Club on June 4 and then with Myanmar on June 11.

As planned, the team will be in Ha Noi on May 28.

Ha Noi triumph at national shooting cup

Ha Noi defended their title at the National Shooting Cup which concluded at the National Sports Training Centre in the capital city on Wednesday.

The team secured 17 gold, four silver and nine bronze medals. The Military team came second with 12 golds, 14 silvers and eight bronzes, while Hai Duong finished third with two golds, eight silvers and five bronzes.

During the seven-day tourney, Hanoian Ngo Huu Vuong set a new record in the men's 10m standard mobile target air rifle with 583 points, breaking the old record of 575 points. Vuong's teammate Dang Hong Ha also set a new record in the women's 10m mixed mobile target air rifle with 378 points, just one point better than the old record.

After this event, the national shooting team will compete in the ISSF World Cup in Munich tomorrow.-

That wins gold in Myanmar

Vietnamese Nguyen Thi That brought home a gold medal from the Pre-SEA Games Road Race which ended in Naypyitaw, Myanmar yesterday.

That sprinted perfectly in the last metres to top the women's individual time trial mass start event with a time of 2hr 38.44min. She was just half a wheel ahead of Jutatip of Thailand and Kheng Dinal from Singapore.

It was the only one medal that Viet Nam grabbed from the tournament. Earlier Vietnamese racers failed in other events.

The team will arrive home tomorrow and prepare for the An Giang Women's Cycling Tournament in early July.

HCM City 1 secure men's crown

HCM City 1 team beat Binh Duong 1 2-1 in the men's team final to win the National Team Tennis Championship yesterday.

Teenager Nguyen Hoang Thien had a perfect day by winning his singles and doubles matches to take the trophy and prize money of VND30 million (US$1,400).

Thien, 18, took two hours to beat Hoang Thanh Trung of Binh Duong 1 in two sets, 7-5, 6-1.

The HCM City native struggled to win the first set in 1 hour and 15 minutes, but he overpowered his opponent in the second set with two aces and three break points.

Serving and winning the first game, Trung, who was once a ball-boy, did not keep his momentum in the second game, missing a break point.

Thien equalised in the second game, and won a break point in the third game before leading 3-1 in the fourth game.

Game five saw Thien dominating with 40-0 and a break point.

Trung, 34, did not turn around the situation with his defensive play and greater experience against a youthful teenager, losing the sixth and the seventh game.

In the second singles match, a rising star Ly Hoang Nam helped Binh Duong tie the score when he beat Trung Hieu 6-1, 6-1.

But Thien and his partner Do Quoc Khanh took a 6-4, 6-4 win over Thanh Trung and Anh Vu in the double match to complete a win for HCM City.

On Wednesday, HCM City also won the women's title.

Golf Budapest Open Tournament 2013 held

Eighty Vietnamese golfers from the East-Central part of Europe have joined the Golf Budapest Open Tournament 2013 in Hungary.

The event was held on May 19-20 for the third time by the Vietnamese Golf Club and the Vietnamese Embassy in Budapest.

Among the registered players were Vietnamese Ambassadors to Hungary, Austria, Poland, Slovakia, Belgium, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria.

After two-day competition, the golfers from Hungary won the championship title.

In the women’s event, the top three were from the Vietnamese Golf Club in Budapest, which was established four years ago and has been recognized as an official member of the Vietnam Golf Association.

Vietnam placed first at Sudirman Cup’s group 3B

Vietnamese badminton players defeated Switzerland 3-2 in group 3B in the final match of the qualifying round of the world team championships (Sudirman Cup) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on May 23.

In the mixed doubles event, Tuan Duc/Thu Huyen lost 12-21 and 14-21 to Dumartheray Anthony/Jaquet Sabrina in the first and second sets, respectively.

In the women’s singles event, Vu Thi Trang also lost 1-2 to Jaquet Sabrina.

However, in the men’s doubles event, Hoang Nam/Bao Duc defeated Gilles Tripet/Florian Schmid 2-0.

In the men’s singles, Tien Minh beat Lukas Nussbaumer 2-0 just after 21 minutes, while in the women’s doubles event, Vu Thi Trang/Nguyen Thi Sen also defeated Tiffany Zaugg/Ayla Huser 2-0.

Topping group 3B the Vietnamese team is scheduled to meet the leading team of group 3A on May 24.
