Wrestlers compete in Thai Nguyen

More than 200 wrestlers from 19 provinces across the country are taking part in National Wrestling Championships that opened in the northern province of Thai Nguyen on October 11.





Wrestlers are competing in one of three events: Greco-Roman for men, and free-style for both men and women.

In the men’s event, athletes are competing in weight categories ranging from 50-120kg, while female athletes are participating in various categories from 44-72kg.

The organising board will select the best from a range of young athletes for the national team.

Immediately after the opening ceremony, Nghiem Dinh Dat from the Public Security team won a decisive victory against Nguyen Quoc Trieu from Hanoi in the male Greco-Roman event.

The tournament will last through to October 17.

Vietnamese chess players invited to UAE tournament

Viet Nam have been invited to take part in the World Cities Team Championship for the Sheikh Zayed Cup in Al Ain, the United Arab Emirates from December 21-29.

Olympiad champions Armenia will lead 32 teams in the US$150,000 competition.

The UAE have received a bye to join the qualifiers as the hosts.

The tournament is being organised by the Al Ain Chess Club on behalf of the World Chess Federation, the Asian Chess Federation and the UAE Chess Federation.

Teams will be divided into eight groups of four based on their Elo ratings. The top two from each group will advance to the knock-out round.

Marksmen Thanh shoots for top prize in Thai World Cup

Ha Minh Thanh will be the sole Vietnamese representative at the International Shooting Sport Federation World Cup in Thailand on October 22-27.

The Asian Games silver medalist will take part in his strongest event: rapid pistol shooting. Among his 11 rivals there are the top three from the London Olympics: Leuris Pupo of Cuba, Vijay Kumar from India and China's Ding Feng.
Thanh's best result was his fifth standing at the World Cup Milan in May.

The six best shooters from the qualifier will advance to the final on October 26.
