Quoc to compete at world table tennis championship

Doan Kien Quoc will be Viet Nam's sole representative when he competes at the 2011 World Table Tennis Championships' men singles tournament, which officially opened on Monday in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

During the qualifying round, the two-time Olympian Quoc defeated David Jonsson of Iceland and Hubert Noah of Cameroon. He will face off against Thailand's Chaisit Chaitat in the next round.

Quoc and his teammate Tran Tuan Quynh also reached the main round of the men's doubles event after defeating doubles squad Chang Hoi Wa and Leong Kin Wa from Chinese Macau in the qualifying round.

The tournament serves as a warm up for Vietnamese players before the Asian Championships in Qatar in September and the 26th Southeast Asian Games to be held in November in Indonesia.


National youth swimming champs to open


The National Youth Swimming Championship is scheduled to take place from July 20-27 in HCM City's Phu Tho swimming pool.

The swimmers aged from 15 to 17 from more than a dozen teams nationwide will compete in such events as the 50m, 100m, 200m freestyle; 50m, 100m backstroke; 50m, 100m, 200m breast stroke and 50m butterfly.

The event will be a chance for swimmers to improve their skills in preparation for the upcoming National Student Sports Games.


Khanh Hoa pair win beach volleyball tournament


Trong Quoc and Thanh Vinh of Sanna Khanh Hoa won the men's title during the National Beach Volleyball Tournament's first leg, which wrapped up at the Sam Son beach in Thanh Hoa Province on Monday.

Quoc and Vinh defeated Kim Trong and Anh Tuan of Tanimex HCM City 21-1 (14-21, 29-27, 22-20) during the men's final to grab the trophy.

In the third place playoff, Van Dong and Van Tuyen of Military Zone 4 crushed Duy Thanh and Van Vinh of Sanna Khanh Hoa.

On the women's side, veterans Nguyen Thi Mai and Truong Thi Yen of Hai Phong beat veterans Phan Thi Cam Hong and Nguyen Thi Tiep from Tanimex HCM City in three sets.

Doubles squad Hong Loan/Thu Ha of Tanimex HCM City ousted Do Thi Hau/Hoang Thi Huyen of Hai Phong to take third place.

The three-day event's organising board also gave awards to Tanimex HCM City's Lam Kim Trong and Hai Phong's Hoang Thi Huyen as the best players.

This was the first time that the Viet Nam Volleyball Federation had applied the Asian Volleyball Confederation's new competition rules, which dictate that the teams compete in a round robin.
