Over 1,000 to compete at nat’l tourney for disabled in City

More than 1,000 athletes from 27 teams across the country are competing at the National Sports Tournaments for the disabled at HCM City’s Tan Binh Gymnasium.

They will play in seven sports including swimming, table tennis, weightlifting and chess for 680 sets of medals.

This is a chance for the players to hone their skills for upcoming international tournaments, such as Rio Paralympics in Brazil.

The tournament will run until Thursday.

Viet Nam rank ninth at Asian Games for children    

Viet Nam rank ninth out of 45 teams at the ongoing Children of Asia International Sports Games in Russia’s Sakha Republic (Yakutia).

The team have won five golds, three silvers and five bronzes in six out of 22 events at the Games.

On Saturday, Nguyen Huy Hoang brought home a gold medal in the boys’ 400m freestyle after clocking a time of 4:02.15

Nguyen Le Phuong Thao won a silver medal in the girls’ 200m medley with a time of 2:24.45. While on the men’s side, Huynh Man Dat won a silver with a time of 2:10.31.

In the boys’ 100m breaststroke, Pham Thanh Bao took a bronze medal with a time of 1:06.55.

The event, which has been held every four years since 1996 in the Sakha Republic, will finish on July 18.

Su bags bronze for VN in Thai track and field event    

Viet Nam took home a bronze medal from the Thailand Open Track and Field Championships, which ended on Thursday near Bangkok, Thailand.

Bui Van Su came in third in the men’s decathlon event with 6,515 points.

His teammate, Tran Le Quoc Toan, finished fourth, earning 5,840 points.

Other Vietnamese athletes failed to make the top three. The Thailand Open ran from July 4 to 7 at the Thammasat University Sport Complex.

That wins first stage of national women’s cycling tournament

Nguyen Thi That won the first stage of the National Women’s Open Cycling Tournament, An Giang Television Cup, yesterday.

That of Gao Hat Ngoc Troi An Giang took the lead with a time of 48.07sec and average speed of 37.409kmph in the 30km stage around Gia Nghia Town in Dak Nong Province.

That also seized the green jersey as the best sprinter with 22 points, followed by Kim Hyunji of South Korea with 14 points.

Today, cyclists will continue on to second 122km stage from Gia Nghia to Dong Xoai Town.

The 532km tour attracted the participation of 13 domestic and foreign teams, including South Korea’s Seoul cycling team, Indonesia’s customs cycling club, and a team from Thailand.

The event will run until July 15.
