VN volleyballers enjoy first wins
Vietnamese beach volleyballers experienced their first wins at the third Asian Beach Games in Haiyang, China, on Wednesday.
On the women's side, Huynh Do Hong Loan and Nguyen Thi Thu Ha defeated Mongolian counterparts 21-10, 21-3 in Group W while Nguyen Thi Tiep and Phan Thi Cam Hong beat another Mongolian pair 21-10, 21-12 as part of Group X.
In Group P of the men's event, Nguyen Thanh Vinh and Nguyen Trong Quoc beat Turkmenistan's Hojoev and Kichiev. Later Vinh and Quoc achieved a second win after their Tajikistan rivals withdrew from the competition.
Viet Nam sent 91 athletes to compete at the third Asian event, scheduled from June 16-22, with a target to finish among the top ten of the overall medal tally.
Phung leads U-20s at chess tourney
Vo Thi Kim Phung temporarily led the girl's U-20 group at the ongoing Southeast Asian Open Chess Championship in Hue on Wednesday.
Phung won four matches to gain four points after beating Singapore's Ho En Huei Danielle and teammate Doan Thi Van Anh as well as Frayna Janelle Mae and Romero Gladys Hazelle M of the Philippines.
Hoang Thi Nhu Y ranked second with 3.5 points.
In other groups such as the girls' U-8, U-10 and U-14 and boys' U-8, U-10 and U-16, Vietnamese chess players also hold the upper hand.
