Long An claim victory in Hung Vuong volleyball cup
Long An crushed Sanest Khanh Hoa 3-0 in the men's final on Thursday to take the Hung Vuong Volleyball Cup.
With a diverse range of attacks, Long An snatched an important 25-21 lead in the first set to provide an exciting match. They eventually overcame Khanh Hoa 25-22 and 25-23 in the last two sets.
In the third-place women's event playoff, Vietcombank beat PV Oil Thai Binh 3-1.
Long An and Lien Viet Bank, who defeated VTV Binh Dien Long An 3-1 in the women's final game on Wednesday, took the cup and cash prize of VND50million (US$2,200) each.
Vietnamese players enjoy win at China League chess match
Vietnamese chess players Le Quang Liem and Hoang Thi Bao Tram, who play for China's Qingdao Yucai, defeated their rivals in the third round of the China's Chess League Division A on Thursday.
As the Black, Liem (Elo rating of 2689) beat the host's Ma Qun (Elo 2423) after 33 moves, while Tram (2311) won Xu Tong (2217) after 44 moves.
With their wins, the China's team Qingdao Yucai temporally rank third in the standings, with Shanghai and Beijing club first and second, respectively.
VN to host Asian women's junior football competitions
Viet Nam will host the Asian Women's Under-14 Football Festival from June 1-14 at HCM City's Thanh Long Sport Centre.
It is the fourth year in a row that Viet Nam will host the tournament which has attracted 11 entries: Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei, China, North Korea, Myanmar, South Korea, Thailand, the Philippines and host Viet Nam which is represented by a team from HCM City.
After the U14 festival, the city will host the Asian Women's Under-19 Football Championship from October 6-16 at Thong Nhat and Thanh Long stadia.
Participants are Japan, North Korea, South Korea, China, Australia and Viet Nam.
Vietnam to host Asian women’s junior football competition
Vietnam will host the Asian Women’s U14 Football Festival from June 1-14 at Ho Chi Minh City’s Thanh Long Sport Complex.
The tournament will attracted the participation of 11 teams from Hong Kong, Taipei, China, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), Myanmar, the Republic of Korea (RoK), Thailand, the Philippines and the host Vietnam.
After the U14 festival, the city will organise the Asian Women’s U19 Fottball Championship from October from 6-16 at Thong Nhat and Thanh Long stadiums.
Participants are Japan, the DPRK, the RoK, China, Australia and Vietnam.
Hai Duong hosts national table tennis champs
Around 100 table tennis players from 14 teams across the country have registered to take part in the 2011 National Table Tennis Championships to be held in the northern province of Hai Duong from April 18-24.
They will compete in the men’s and women’s singles, doubles and teams events as well as mixed doubles events.
The championships will provide a good opportunity for Vietnam to select players for the national squad in preparation for the coming 26th SEA Games.
Ho Chi Minh City to host Vietnamese Tennis Open
As many as 43 tennis players will take part in the 2011 Vietnamese Tennis Open- Tanimex Cup to be held in Ho Chi Minh City from April 19-23.
They come from Indonesia, Malaysia, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and the Philippines and the host team Vietnam.
The Philippine players are most hopeful for the champion title as they have competed in David Cup for Asia/Oceana Group 1.
The winner of the men’s singles event will receive a cash prize of US$3,000, the highest for a tennis tournament.
Vietnam treads water in rankings
Vietnam stood still at 134th in the FIFA rankings released on April 14, having not competed for the past month.
In Southeast Asia, Vietnam are third behind Thailand (120th) and Indonesia (130th).
The world rankings are still led by Spain, the Netherlands and Brazil.
Children to join Arsenal festival
The Vinamilk-Arsenal Soccer school in Ho Chi Minh City is offering students a chance to take part in the Arsenal International Soccer Festival in London from July 23-31.
Fifteen students aged between 10 and 18 will go on the seven-day trip, where they will compete against other teams from around the world.
They will also have chance to visit Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium.
