VN rank eighth in wushu championships

Viet Nam ranked eighth at the World Wushu Championships which wrapped up in Ankara, Turkey on Saturday.

Members of the rejuvenated team grabbed one gold, three silver and four bronze medals.

The only gold belonged to young talent Nguyen Thanh Tung in the men's taijiquan (supreme ultimate fist) event. Tung is one of Viet Nam's hopes for gold at the upcoming Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia next month.

China, the motherland of wushu, proved their power and the topped podium with 16 golds, followed by Iran with six golds and Hong Kong with two.

U23 players win friendly before VFF Cup

The National U23 team defeated V-League's Ha Noi T&T 4-0 in a friendly held on Saturday in preparation for the Viet Nam Football Federation (VFF) Cup later this week.

Players on the U23 team quickly dominated the game with three goals in the first half by captain Nguyen Thanh Luong, and strikers Dinh Tung and Van Quyet.

Midfielder Thanh Hao boosted the score to 4-0 with a strong header in the early minutes of the second half.

Head coach Falko Goetz was happy with the victory and said he was satisfied with the performance. However, he was troubled when Hao and striker Van Thang suffered serious injuries which may have a serious impact on his plans for the upcoming tournament.

Binh Duong take silver in tournament

Host Becamex Binh Duong lost 0-2 to Matsubara in the final of the Binh Duong Television Cup on Saturday.

Their strikers missed at least four opportunities to score while Matsubara, who demonstrated a weaker line-up, converted their chances into goals at the 75th and 85th minutes.

Ferreira scored both goals from the free kick line. He was later voted the best player of the match.

It was Binh Duong's second unsuccessive year in the final without a win.

In the third-place playoff earlier, Sai Gon Xuan Thanh beat SC Villa 1-0 for the bronze.

 

Vietnam wins gold at World Wushu Champs

 

Nguyen Thanh Tung of Vietnam took home a gold medal today at the World Wushu Championship taking place in Turkey after he topped the men’s non-fighting event Taijiquan with 9.68 points.

 

He is followed by Yoshihiro Sekiya of Japan with 9.62 points and Lee Jae-Hyung of South Korea with 9.58 points.

 

So far, Vietnam has got one gold, silver and bronze medal each and is ranking sixth at the week-long tournament to wrap up Saturday in Ankara City.

 

China is taking the lead on medal tally with 6 gold medals, followed by Hong Kong, Macau, Japan and Russia.

 

Vietnam to attend AFF Women's Champs in Laos

 

The Vietnamese women football team is set to defend its champion title at the 2011 Southeast Asian Football Federation (AFF) Women's Championships in Laos. 

 

Chairman of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) Nguyen Trong Hy was speaking at a meeting on October 13 with the squad under Chinese head coach Chen Yun Fat before they set foot in Laos one day later.

 

Goalkeeper Trinh Thi Hue, midfielders Tran Thi Thu, Pham Thi Hang and Phung Thi Nhung will not join the squad this time.

 

National Shooting Championships close

 

The Army team claimed the 17th National Shooting Championships, which closed in Hanoi on October 14, with a total medal haul of 18 gold, 15 silver and 10 bronze medals.     

 

The Hanoi team followed closely behind in second place with 17 golds, while the Hai Duong team came third with 5 golds.

 

This year’s tournament attracted over 160 athletes and 30 coaches from 10 teams all over the country, including Haiphong, the Army, Thanh Hoa, Quang Ninh, Hai Duong, the Ministry of Public Security, Vinh Phuc, Hanoi and HCM City.

 

Students Football Champs to open in HCM City

 

As many as 23 teams will compete in the 10th Municipal Students Football Championships to be held in Ho Chi Minh City from October 22-November 26 to mark the 55th anniversary of the Vietnam Youth Union (October 15). 

 

They will be divided into five groups to play in a round robin format which will decide the teams progressing to the next stages.

 

The total cash prize for the tournament will be VND 65 million.

 

Le Quang Liem competes at SPICE Cup in US

 

Super International Grand chess master Le Quang Liem left Ho Chi Minh City on October 12 to attend the SPICE Cup in the US from October 15-25.

 

Six grand masters invited to the Cup include Le Quang Liem from Vietnam, Lienier Dominguez from Cuba, Sebastien Feller from France, Georg Meier from Germany, and Yury Shulman and Ray Robson from the US.

 

The tournament has the highest average Elo in the history of the US with participating masters’ Elo of minimum 2583.

 

Le Quang Liem has the highest Elo of 2717, followed by Lienier Dominguez (2710), Sebastien Feller (2668), Georg Meier (2648), Yury Shulman (2608) and Ray Robson (2583).

 

After the tournament, Liem will attend the 26th SEA Games in Indonesia in November and Mind Game in China in December.
