Tam wins 2nd stage, Tung retains yellow

Ha Thanh Tam from the Vinh Binh Rice Factory team powered to his second stage victory of the Return to the Country – An Giang Plant Protection Cup, winning the seventh stage yesterday, May 16.

Tam finished the 78km stage from Soc Trang City to Vi Thanh City in a time of one hour, 55 minutes and 43 seconds, followed by Huynh Thanh Tung of Military Zone 7 and Tran Nguyen Minh Tri of Domesco Pharmacy Dong Thap.

Tung's second place finish ensured he retained the yellow jersey with an overall time of 13:56.18, followed closely by Tam and Tri.

Domesco Pharmacy Dong Thap lead the team competition with an overall time of 41:57.45, followed by Military Zone 7 and Vinh Binh Rice Factory.

Today, cyclists will compete on the 118km eighth and final stage from Vi Thanh City to Long Xuyen City.

Futsal championships to attract top teams

The National Futsal Championships is expected to attract 18 teams from June 3-17 at the Tuyen Son Sport Complex in Da Nang City, the largest figure since 2007.

The winning team will receive VND30 million (US$1,400), the runner-up will pocket VND20 million ($960), and the two third- place teams will go home with VND15 million each ($720).

The organisers will also award prizes worth VND5 million ($240) to the best player, best goalkeeper and top scorer.

On the opening day in Group A, Thai Son Bac will meet Hong Lac while Kim Toan FC will face Tan Hiep Hung. In Group B, football fans will have a chance to see Sanatech Phu Yen play VLT Da Nang, and Dat Vinh Tien HCM City take on PVC Ha Noi.

Duyen fails to qualify for London Games

Luu Thi Duyen has missed her chance to qualify for the London Olympic this summer.

She was defeated 13-28 by American Marlen Espazra in the last 16 of the 51kg category at the seventh AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships in Qinhuangdao, China on Tuesday.

The top eight athletes in the 51kg, 60kg and 75kg event will earn tickets to the Games, according to the rules.

Earlier, Le Thi Nhung lost 6-20 to Thai Sudaporn Seesondee in the first round of the 75kg.
