2012 National Boxing Champs opens in Dak Lak

The 2012 National Boxing Championships opened in the Central Highland province of Dak Lak on August 20 with the participation of 111 male and 80 female boxers from across the country.

They will compete in 11 different weight categories ranging from 46 to 91kg for men and 10 others from 45 to 81kg for women.
All the matches will take place in square rings with a total of 30 national and international referees involved.

There will be fierce competition at the tournament with the participation of strong boxers from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and some other opponents, who won medals at the 3rd Asian Indoor Games in Vietnam and the 1st Asian Martial Arts Games in Thailand in 2009.

The event aims to select outstanding boxers for the national squad to prepare for the upcoming international competitions, including the 27th Southeast Asian Games in Malaysia and the 4th Asian Indoor Games in the Republic of Korea in 2013.

The Linh to sponsor women's football

The Linh Company has been named the sponsor of the Southeast Asian Women's Football Championship to be held in HCM City next month.

It is the first time that The Linh, specialising in construction materials, has been associated with the women's tournament at regional level, and it's expected that the company will play a key role in the success of the event.

With seven teams participating, the competition kicks off on September 13 at Thong Nhat Stadium.

Hosts Viet Nam are in Group A together with Singapore, Myanmar and the Philippines, while Group B will see Thailand, Malaysia, Laos and Indonesia face off.

Teams will play in round robin format and the best two will advance to the semi-finals. The final is scheduled for September 22.
Viet Nam will play Singapore in the opening match, followed by the Philippines and Myanmar.

At last year championship, Thailand beat Myanmar 2-1 in the final to take the crown, while Viet Nam won a bronze medal.

The host team will prepare for the tourament with a short training session in China.

U13 PVF team to compete in Japan

The Under-13 Promotion Fund of Vietnamese Football Talents (PVF) team left s for Japan yesterday to compete at the Jubilo Cup, an international tournament for teenagers.

The tourney, organised by Japanese football club Jubilo Iwata in co-operation with Yamaha Corporation, will take place from tomorrow to next Monday.

The PVF team, coached by Nguyen Huu Dang, was chosen to represent Viet Nam to take part in the tourney after winning the U13 national football championships in July.

Asian Wushu Champs attract 350 athletes

The 8th Asian Wushu Championships began at Phu Tho Competition House in Ho Chi Minh City on August 21.

About 350 martial artists from 22 countries and territories are competing in the Taolu and Sanshou events for nearly 40 sets of medals.

Vietnamese athletes trained for the tournament from August 1-3, and they aim to bag four gold medals to rank among the top five winners.

The five-day tournament is being co-organised by the Vietnam Sports and Physical Training Administration, HCM City Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Municipal Martial Arts Federation, and An Vien Television (AVG).
