Assistant coach Nguyen Dinh Hung has been appointed chief coach of V-League side Vicem Hai Phong.

Hung, 40, replaces current coach Vuong Tien Dung who was fired early this week. Under Dung's reign Hai Phong dropped to second from bottom (13th) place with only 23 points after 22 rounds.

"I feel both worried and happy. It is a big responsibility to lead a V-League team for the first time. I will use this chance to express my ability," Hung said.

Since the start of the season, Hai Phong have lost many of its good players while newcomers find their feet. In addition, several key players have been sidelined due to injuries.

At end of the 2010 season, Hai Phong finished second behind Ha Noi T&T.

Ha Noi ranked fifth at tourney

The Ha Noi Youth Baseball Club ranked fifth in the final round of the U12 Asia-Pacific Baseball Tournament 2011, which concluded in Seoul, South Korea, on Wednesday.

With only three years of training, the young Hanoians surprised both fans and competitors at the tournament, defeating rivals Indonesia by 14-3 during their last match on Wednesday.

"We are extremely happy with the results. While Viet Nam have only been playing baseball for the last three years, Indonesia have over 20 years of experience, winning the bronze medal at the 25th Southeast Asian Games in Laos," said Thomas Treutler, the American lawyer who built up the team on the back of his own funds.

Although the team lost to South Korea and Japan, they managed to trump both Hong Kong and Russia.

Tournament champions are set to advance to the U12 World Baseball Championships to be held in the US next August.

The Hanoians, the first baseball team in Viet Nam, won the Youth League Asia-Pacific Baseball Tournament in January.
