Minh progresses to semi-finals

Viet Nam's top badminton player Nguyen Tien Minh defeated Malaysia's Daren Liew 14-21, 21-11, 21-13 in the quarter-finals of the Li Ning Singapore Open on Friday, June 22.

Although quickly losing the first set, Minh remained calm to control the second and third. It took him only 56 minutes to beat his Malaysian rival.

Belgian youth set for friendlies

As many as 31 kids from the Belgian Arsenal JMG Academy will play friendly football matches against Vietnamese players from the Hoang Anh Gia Lai-Arsenal JMG Academy from June 30 to July 19 in Pleiku City, Gia Lai Province.

Jean Marc Guillou, global director of the academy, will be present to scout promising footballers for a training course with the Arsenal youth team.

Last year, students from the HAGL-Arsenal JMG Academy were trained in Egypt over one month. They experienced two wins and one loss against players from a Thai academy as well as one win and two losses against trainees from an Egyptian academy.

Local basketballers triumph

Khanh Hoa and Binh Thuan won the men's and women's events at the central region qualifiers of the National U17 Basketball Tournament in Da Nang City on Thursday.

Khanh Hoa beat Hue National High School 35-24 to finish first in the men's division while Binh Thuan came out top against host's Phan Boi Chau High School.

The first and second placed teams of each event will represent the central region at the final round in Da Nang City that will kick off tomorrow, June 24.
