Liem, Son set up for World Cup

International Super Grandmaster Le Quang Liem will play Susanto Megaranto of Indonesia in the first round of the World Chess Cup on Saturday in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia.

His teammate Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son will meet with Li Chao of China at the same event. The Vietnamese representatives have checkmated their two rivals several times in the past and hope to beat them again and enter the second round, a feat that has never been achieved before.

Liem, the Aeroflot tournament champion and runner-up at the Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meet, is seeded No 20, while Son, who won a bronze medal at the Asian Chess Championship 2011, is No 73, amonth 128 masters.

The two will leave for Khanty-Mansiysk on Thursday and hope to share the US$1.6 million cash prize.

Viet Nam palms Singaporian gold

Viet Nam won one gold and two silver medals from the Singapore Open Track and Field Championship which closed on Sunday.

The Vietnamese gold medalist was Do Thi Thao, who triumphed in the women's 800m race with a time of 2min 9.18sec.

Thao, who pocketed a bronze medal from the 25th Southeast Asian Games in Laos two years ago, beat out three strong rivals – Dell Salome, Koniel Donna and Tine Tuna – from Papua New Guinea to top the podium.

Nguyen Van Ly took a silver in the men's 5,000m, clocking 15:19.56. He was behind Filipino Sore Hernani who timed 15:10.00. Earlier, Ly finished second in the 1,500m with a time of 4:02.98. Mehendran Vadivellan of Malaysia, who was the first runner-up in the 25th SEA Games, snatched the gold with a time of 3:58.07.

Dong Dong defeat Quang Nam

HCM City's Dong Dong club beat Quang Nam 6-3 to win the Tiger Street Football Tournament's fourth leg in Da Nang City on Sunday.

Dong Dong will represent Viet Nam at the Grand Finale of the tournament in Malaysia in September.

Earlier Dong Dong finished first in the event's southwestern region.

International Tiger Street Football, which includes four legs in Singapore, Thailand, China and Viet Nam, will see top teams from each local leg fight it out for the Tiger Street Football Champion with cash prizes totalling US$30,000.
