VN competes at chess tourney


Viet Nam's chess team are taking part in the Asian Zone 3.3 chess championships which kicked off yesterday, May 23, in Subic, the Philippines.

At stake are two places at the 2011 World Chess Cup scheduled later this year in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia.

Viet Nam's Pham Le Thao Nguyen and Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son have already qualified for the competition, having won a silver and bronze medal at the recent Asian Individual Chess Championships in Mashhad, Iran.


Hue set to host futsal event



Twelve teams will be participating in the National Futsal (Indoor football) Championship in the central city of Hue from June 18-30.

The teams will be divided into two groups in which they will compete in a round robin format for a place in the semi-finals.

The winners will take home VND25 million (US$1,200), while the second and third placed teams will receive VND15 million and VND10 million.

The top striker and best goal keeper will also receive VND2 million each.


Young judokas ready for battle


The National Youth Judo Championship will be taking place from June 5-10 in the southern province of Bac Lieu.

Nearly 400 judokas will compete in four age groups including 10-11, 12-13, 14-15 and 16-19.

The event's best athletes will be chosen for the national youth team,


Junior athletes to race in Vinh


The National Junior Athletics Champion-ships is scheduled to kick off on June 2 in Vinh city, the central province of Nghe An.

The nine-day event will draw more than 600 athletes, to be divided into 13-14, 14-15 and 15-16 age groups, from 50 cities and provinces nationwide in order to compete in disciplines including high jump, long jump and short and long distance running.

Khanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Noi, the Army, Can Tho and HCM City have sent 25 athletes each in order to participate in the event.


MILO Cup 2010 kicks off


The HCM City Student Basketball Tournament – MILO Cup 2011 opened on Sunday with 121 teams coming from 68 primary, secondary and high schools throughout the city.

The championship is being organised by the Basketball Union and the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism. It is being sponsored by Nestle Viet Nam.
