Van Ngoc Tu will be the first Vietnamese athlete to compete at the London Olympics as the judo women's under-48kg category is set to kick off one day after the opening ceremony tomorrow.
Tu, who is the only judo athlete from the South-east Asia region competing in this event, will face 18 rivals, including the defending champion Alina Alexandra Dumitru of Romania and bronze medallist Paula Pareto from Argentina.

The chances of her progressing to the finals may depend on the result of a draw for the competition which will be organised this afternoon.
Chi wins two gold at chess champs
Phan Nguyen Mai Chi of Da Nang won two gold medals in the women's U20 standard and rapid events of the National Youth Chess Championships in HCM City.
The women's U20 blitz event belonged to Vo Thi Kim Phung of Thua Thien-Hue.
Ha Noi players dominated men's U20 standard and blitz events with Tran Ngoc Lan and Tran Tuan Minh topping two categories, respectively. Nguyen Van Thanh of Da Nang won the men's U20 rapid event.
HCM City players earned most medals in other groups. They took first place in the team's rankings in all the events, followed by Ha Noi and Dong Thap.

Teams prepare for volleyball semis
Hosts HCM City and Sanest Khanh Hoa will compete in the semi-finals of the HCM City Open International Volleyball Championships at Rach Mieu Gymnasium today, July 26.
HCM City will play against Thai Royal Air Force, who they beat 3-2 in the qualifying round while Sanest Khanh Hoa will face tough rival China's Shanghai.
