Kiri Thode leads in VN windsurfing competition


Kiri Thode from the Netherlands edged world defending champion Golito Estredo from Venezuela to finish first in the second round of the men's freestyle at the Viet Nam Professional Windsurfers Association Grand Slam at Mui Ne Beach in the south central province of Binh Thuan on Saturday.

The 21-year-old, who also finished top in first round, is favourite to win the title.

The Viet Nam Grand Slam, the first of four major sporting events of the year, is organised by the Professional Windsurfers Association.

This year it attracted 116 professional windsurfers (20 of whom were women). They competed in slalom with a figure-of-eight course and freestyle.

The event ends on Saturday.


Six teams to compete for Hoa Lu volleyball cup


Six teams, five domestic and the Lao national squad, will compete in the Hoa Lu Volleyball tournament in Ninh Binh Province, which starts tomorrow, March 1, and ends on Sunday.

The winners will walk away with VND70 million (US$3,500) in prize money.

The Viet Nam Federation of Volleyball on Friday signed a sponsorship deal with OceanBank and PetroVietnam Gas.


Former national team member dies at 76


Football star Truong Tan Nghia, who played for Viet Nam and The Cong (Army team), died, aged 76, in HCM City on Friday.

Nghia, who was born in the southern province of Long An, joined the national team in 1956 at the time his father Truong Tan Buu was also playing.

He scored a hattrick in the last five minutes of his first game to help Viet Nam beat Bresob 3-1 in a friendly in the former Czechslovakia in 1964.
