Viet Nam win two silver, one bronze at xiangqi champs

Viet Nam returned home with two silver medals and one bronze at the 17th Asian Xiangqi (Chinese chess) Championships, which concluded in the Philippines yesterday, Oct 18.

The men's team of Vo Minh Nhat, Trenh A Sang and Ton That Nhat Tan gained silver after seven rounds with five wins, one draw and one loss, earning 11 points. China topped the event with 13 points; Hong Kong were third with 10 points.

Ngo Lan Huong won silver in the individual women's event, losing to Tang Dan of China in the final after 61 moves.
Bronze went to Nguyen Minh Nhat Quang in the individual junior event, losing to Li Han Lin of China in the semi-finals and beating Chen Jing of Singapore for third.

HAGL U18s vanquish Arsenal in training match in England

Hoang Anh Gia Lai-Arsenal JMG Academy U18 team defeated Arsenal U18s 1-0 on Saturday during their training course in England.

The team put pressure on Arsenal's goal and their efforts were rewarded by striker Hoang Thanh Tung.

Earlier, the Vietnamese squad had a chance to watch two Arsenal matches against Schalke 04 in the Champions League and Queen Park Rangers in the English Premier League.

The team, the first class from the academy, are expected to finish their course in 2014.

Badminton players fall to Philippines in Japan tourney

Viet Nam lost to the Philippines 1-3 in the team competition finals at the ongoing Yonex Badminton World Federation Junior Championships in Chiba, Japan, yesterday.

Do Tuan Duc and Le Thu Huyen earned a point for the team in the women's double's event, but the Vietnamese players lost in the men's and women's singles and the men's doubles.

Competitors will have a day-off today before taking part in the singles events from Tuesday to Saturday.

Shooter Thanh finishes 12th in World Cup Final

Marksman Ha Minh Thanh failed to cause an upset at the International Shooting Sport Federation World Cup Final after finishing 12th in the men's 25m rapid fire pistol event in Bangkok, Thailand, on Friday.

After six rounds he had accumulated 574 points which was not enough for him to qualify for the finals.

Martin Strnad of the Czech Republic won the event, followed by Christian Reitz of Germany and Zhang Jian of China.

Thanh has returned to Ha Noi to prepare for the National Shooting Championships in November.

Tra Vinh top national team petanque tournament

Tra Vinh topped the national team petanque tournament with two golds, one silver and one bronze.

Military Zone 9 and Soc Trang came in second and third.

The tournament attracted 113 athletes from 12 cities and provinces across the country. It wrapped up last Friday in the southern province of Dong Thap.
