Vietnamese storm to semi-finals at world boxing event


Vietnamese boxers are through to the semi-finals of the ongoing AIBA Youth and Junior World Championships in Antalya, Turkey.

In the 54kg youth division, Liu Thi Duyen, who defeated Kazakhstan's Ilona Felonenkova 36-8 in the quarter-final, will face India's Basumatary Pwilao in the semi-final.

In the junior competition, Pham Thi Phuong in the 48kg division and Vuong Thi Vy in the 52kg division are already sure of at least a bronze medal after making the semi-finals in their respective categories.

Phuong eliminated Ireland's Christine Gargan and Vy dismissed Russia's Maria Sokolova in the quarter-finals to keep their medal hopes alive.

The tournament has provided a good opportunity for all of them to gain useful experience for the upcoming London 2012 Olympics.


Ha called up to VN volleyball team as SEA Games approach


Top Vietnamese volleyballer Nguyen Huu Ha has been called up to the national team in preparation for the upcoming Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Indonesia this November.

Ha, aged 30, resumed training with his new team Duc Long-Gia Lai club last month after a year on the sidelines.

He was banned from domestic competitions following controversy over his contract with former club Trang An Ninh Binh last year before he moved to his new team.

At the 24th SEA Games in Thailand in 2007, Ha helped the national team win the silver medal.


Ha Nam draw with Coal and Mineral in women's tourney


Hosts Phong Phu Ha Nam were held to a goalless draw by Viet Nam Coal and Mineral in their match of the first leg of the National Women's Football Championships in the northern province of Ha Nam on Wednesday.

Home support failed to inspire Ha Nam who were dominated by the visitors, but they managed to finish with honours even.

After the five match first leg, Ha Noi Trang An 1 lead Ha Nam on goal difference with 10 points, followed by HCM City on eight points.

The teams will have two months off to prepare for the second round of qualifying for the London 2012 Olympics which is scheduled to be held in HCM City on June 2-12.

The second leg of the Championships will run from July 2 to 20 in Ha Nam Province.

The winning team will take home VND200 million (US$10,000), double last year's prize money. The two runners-up will pocket VND100 million and VND50 million.
