Local star Minh to miss out on Superseries finals

Viet Nam's top badminton player Nguyen Tien Minh has failed to qualify for the season-ending Badminton World Federation's Superseries Finals. Minh finished the year ranked 17th in the OSIM BWF World Superseries Standings 2012.

The top eight men's and women's singles and doubles players will be invited to battle it out for total prize money of US$500,000.

The tournament, which is the climax of the 12-leg BWF Superseries circuit, will be played from December 12 -16 in China.

Grandmaster Liem climbs world chess rankings

Chess grandmaster Le Quang Liem has jumped a step to 40th in world ranking, according to the World Chess Federation's December list released on Sunday.

Liem ranks fourth in Asia and No 1 in Southeast Asia.

On the women's side, the sole representative from Viet Nam is GM Pham Le Thao Nguyen, standing at 52nd.
None of Viet Nam's junior boys are in the top 100, but Nguyen Thi Mai Hung is No 26 in the girls' ranking.

Tu, Nam lead in men's national chess event

Nguyen Hoang Nam took the lead in the men's event at the National Top Chess Players Tournament on Monday.

In his sixth game, Nam of the Military team drew with Lam Dong's Bao Khoa to secure first place with five points.
With 4.5 points, Hanoian Tran Tuan Minh is in second after beating Can Tho's Nguyen Duc Hoa.

Le Thanh Tu of Ha Noi leads the women's competition, followed by HCM City's Le Kieu Thien Kim, Kien Giang's Pham Bich Ngoc and Hanoian Hoang Bao Tram who are all on 4.5 points.

The event will finish today.
