Cuong wins bronze medal at 3-cushion carom world cup

Cueist Ma Xuan Cuong won bronze medal at the carom 3-cushion World Cup in Seoul on Sunday.

The world No 35 lost to world No 19 Jae-Cho Ho of South Korea 3-1 (15-2, 15-14, 15-11, 15-12) in the semi-final.

Cuong's success was unexpected. Earlier, he defeated world No 2 Caudon Frederic.

It is the second achievement in four years for Viet Nam's carom 3-cushion participants in the World Cup. At the 2007 Suwon World Cup, HCM City's Tran Chi Thanh was runner-up.

Viet Nam sent seven players from HCM City to compete at the event which wrapped up yesterday, Sep 5. It attracted more than 100 players, including those in the top 15.

Vietnamese players were able to hone their skills for the 26th Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia in November.

Hanoian Huy takes national chess championships crown

International Grandmaster (IG) Nguyen Van Huy from Ha Noi won the men's National Chess Championships in Cao Lanh, Dong Thap province.

He finished with seven points, followed by Cao Sang from Lam Dong and Nguyen Huynh Minh Huy from Dong Thap.

In the women's side, IG Nguyen Thi Thanh An from HCM City topped the tournament with 7.5 points.

He was followed by Hanoian Hoang Thi Bao Tram and Hoang Thi Nhu Y from Thua Thien-Hue.

Phuoc from Da Nang shines at national swimming tourney

Young talent Hoang Quy Phuoc from Da Nang brought home the second gold medal at the National Swimming Championship on Sunday.

He won the men's 50m butterfly in 25.35, outside his own record of 24.58. Runners-up were Nguyen Van Dat of Thanh Hoa and Vo Thai Nguyen of An Giang.

Phuoc, who has become the first Vietnamese athlete to secure a place at the London Olympics 2012, played a key role in helping his team win gold in the men's 400m relay on Sunday.

On the women's side, Nguyen Thi Ngoc Bich from Long An took gold with a time of 29.34. Le Thi Viet Trinh of Quang Binh and Le Thi My Thao of Binh Phuoc came second and third respectively.

Swimmer Nguyen Huu Viet from the northern port city of Hai Phong brought home the second gold medal in the men's 100m breaststroke with a time of 1:04.14.

Nguyen Tien Hung from the Army and Hoang Dinh Long of Da Nang were runners-up.

Meanwhile, Quang Binh's Trinh took gold in the women's 100m breaststroke with a time of 1:13.68. Teammate Ngo Thi Thanh Duyen and HCM City's Nguyen Thi Bao Nhi took silver and bronze respectively.
