2012 Asian Diving Cup opens in Danang

The 2012 Asian Diving Cup and Youth Championships opened in the central city of Danang on November 7.

Around 230 divers from Vietnam, China, Republic of Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan will compete for 30 sets of medals from the cup and 24 others from the youth championships.

At the 2010 event in Taiwan, Vietnam was placed third with a total of five golds, three silvers and four bronzes.

Lifters weigh in for Asian championships

Viet Nam has sent six competitors to take part in the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships in Yangon, Myanmar.

The event which kicked off yesterday, Nov 6, and will run until November 12 will be a qualifier for the second Asian Youth Games in 2014 in Nanjing, China.

Participants from 30 countries and territories are taking part in the event, including powerhouses from China, Kazakhstan, North Korea and Indonesia.

The Vietnamese representatives are Thach Kim Tuan and Nguyen Tran Tuan Anh (men's U56kg), Nguyen Thien Quoc (men's U62kg), Tran Thi My Dung and Pham Hong Dao (women's U53kg) and Ngo Nhuan Nu (men's U63kg).

Female GM to compete in Russian world chess

Hoang Thanh Trang, formerly of Vietnam, will compete in the Women's World Chess Championships 2012 in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, from November 9 to December 3.

She will join 27 other European women in this year's event, which is expected to attract 64 players.

She is seeded No.22 and will meet Russian Evgenija Ovod in her first match.

Trang is a Hungarian Grand Master who was born in Hanoi and moved to Budapest with her family at the age of 10.

Her victories include the 1998 World Girls Junior (U20) Championship, the 2005 European Chess Club Championship and the 2011 European Women's Rapid Championship.

Vietnam has no representatives at the tournament after failing at the regional qualifying rounds.

Phuoc, Vien to make splash at Asian champs

Viet Nam will send two swimmers to compete at the ninth Asian Swimming Championships from November 15-25 in the United Arab Emirates.

Hoang Quy Phuoc and London Olympian Nguyen Thi Anh Vien will be taking to the pool.

At the 26th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Indonesia last November, 18-year-old Phuoc set a new SEA Games record in the men's 100m butterfly event, while 16-year-old Vien proved her talent at the recent Southeast Asian Swimming Championships in Singapore.

In preparation for the event, Vien has been training in Florida while Phuoc has been on a course in China.

The 11-day event will draw around 700 athletes from 23 member nations. Among the entries are Olympians and Olympic champions.

This will be the first time that all four disciplines in the 50m pool, synchronised swimming, water polo and diving will be contested in one competition in one venue, the Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Sports Complex in the UAE.

The championships will be a qualifying event for the FINA Swimming World Championships in July 2013.
